Thinking about giving up?

22nd November 2018

You don't have to quit on your own and it's actually far better for you if you get some advice and encouragement along the way.

More people in Bexley are giving up smoking than ever before. Bexley Stop Smoking Service has supported thousands of smokers to stop and stay stopped since it started offering it's free and effective service in 2001. There's plenty of free help and support to access via Stop Smoking Clinics available right across the borough. Evidence shows that the most efficient way to stop is to attend individual appointments with a Stop Smoking Advisor for at least the first four weeks after setting your agreed Quit Date. That way you'll get the best advice about medication, reassurance around any withdrawal symptoms and lots of encouragement and motivation.

Here are our Top Ten tips:

  1. Click on "Sign Up For A Session"  on this page.
  2. Make sure you can attend weekly appointments over the next 4 to 6 week period.
  3. Use evidence-based medication to help you quit.
  4. The week before you set your quit date - keep a diary so you know the times you most feel the need to smoke and are most vulnerable to giving in - then plan to do something other than smoking at that time. Your Advisor can help you plan new strategies.
  5. You will notice that you have more free time once you stop smoking. This is a good time to start other positive changes such as taking more exercise and reviewing your diet.
  6. If you're using patches remember to change them every day and change where you place them.
  7. Remember a craving for a cigaratte only lasts about 7 seconds.  Keep busy and distract yourself - the craving will pass.
  8. Be vigilant and keep up your coping strategies.
  9. Congratulate yourself every day you remain smokefree.
  10. Stay Stopped - do not become complacent, relapse is common.  Be on your guard against temptation.
