New tobacco legislation now in place
Legislation to protect children from being the target of tobacco promotion and help people quit smoking came into effect on Friday 6 April. All large shops and supermarkets in England now need to cover up cigarettes and hide tobacco products from public view. Those responsible in shops not complying with the new legislation could be fined up to £5,000 or face imprisonment.
More than 8 million people in England still smoke, with nearly two-thirds of current and ex-smokers saying that started before they were 18. Bexley Stop Smoking Service offers free and effective help to quit to any smoker living or working in the London Borough of Bexley.
