Smoking while pregnant

22nd November 2018

There is no safe level of smoking for anyone but if you continue to smoke while you are pregnant you'll be putting your baby at serious risk of a premature delivery, at increased risk of miscarriage, stillbirth or sudden infant death (also known as cot death).

No matter how many weeks or months you are into your pregnancy, it's never too late to stop smoking.  Quitting will be the best thing you can do for yourself and the best gift you can give to your baby.

Your Midwife will ask you about your smoking status at your first appointment and all smokers will automatically be referred for quit support. Pregnant smokers are encouraged to self-refer at any time during their pregnancy.

Although it can be difficult, you will want to give your baby the greatest possible start in life. Your local specialist smoking-in-pregnancy advisor can support you to make the change from smoker to non-smoker.
